One design goal of my lamps is to be portable and deployable for transportation to events & festivals. Since they're primarily empty space inside, a collapsible design makes sense to pack a number of them into your car (or ship them). Plus, I really geek out over origami and folding structures. I prototyped this tree lamp last year on my Shapeoko 2 to have hinges and do just that:

Recently I discovered Autodesk's Fusion 360 software, which helps to model and simulate all kinds of rigid structures -- including hinges! So you can try complex designs to see if they're physically plausible given your materials and construction techniques. First experiments are encouraging, and I'm excited to produce some of these and get more fancy.
